Estradiol may be used to induce estrus (heat) or estrus
behavior and for long-term treatment of urinary incontinence in horses. Estradiol,
a hormone, has also been used in dogs and cats as a mismate treatment to prevent
pregnancy. This indication for dogs and cats is rarely used today since there
are safer alternatives.
The FDA (U.S. Food & Drug Administration) has approved
estradiol for use in humans, but not animals. The FDA allows veterinarians to
prescribe and use products containing this drug in different species or for
other conditions in certain situations; however, this drug is not to be used in
food-producing animals. You and your veterinarian can discuss why this drug is
the most appropriate choice.

What are the side effects of Estradiol 1 mg Tablet?
Estradiol has a high risk of causing endometrial hyperplasia and pyometra. There is a dose-dependent risk of bone marrow toxicity in animals, particularly in dogs. Estradiol cypionate injections have produced leukopenia, thrombocytopenia, and fatal aplastic anemia. Because stem cells can be affected, the bone marrow toxicity may not be reversible. These adverse effects can be severe, and other agents should be used instead of estradiol cypionate whenever possible.
What special precautions are there?
